LAKE VICTORIA

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, also the second widest fresh water lake in the world. Lake Victoria ranked as the seventh largest fresh water lake by volume containing 2750 cubic kilometers of water.
It’s the source of the River Nile the longest river.
It lies within a plateau in the Western part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley and is administered by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
The lake has more than 3000 islands many of which are inhabited.
North West islands of the Lake have become popular destinations for tourism.

British explorer John Hanning Speke first sited the Lake in 1858 when he reached its Southern shore on his journey to explore Central Africa; he then named the lake after Queen Victoria.

Lake Victoria touches the Equator in the North. The ferries at the Lake have been an important means of transport between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The main ports being Kisumu, Bukoba, Mwanza, Jinja and Entebbe.
