Mt Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and second largest in Africa. It lies about 140km North of Nairobi and South of the Equator. The mountain has two peaks-Batian (5200m) and Nelion (5188m).Mt Kenya is a water catchment area supplying water to two large rivers. Tana River the largest river in Kenya and Ewaso Ng’iro North.
It includes variety of habitats e.g. alpine moorlands, glaciers, tarns, bamboo.The highest rainfall occurs between late March and the middle of May and slightly less between late October and mid December.
It was described by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
WHAT TO SEE
On the lower slopes of Mount Kenya there is plenty of wildlife to see e.g. rhino, buffalo, leopard, elephant, colobus monkeys and variety of owls.
Also there are activities such as mountain climbing and hiking.
There are also unique species to view such as mineral springs, tarns, lakes, glaciers, unique montane and alpine vegetation with 11 species of endemic plants.
HOW TO GET THERE
Mt Kenya can be accessed through Nanyuki – Isiolo road via Sirimon track. It’s about 175km from Nairobi.
Or Nyeri – Nanyuki road near Naromoro
Another alternative is Chogoria on the Embu – Meru road about 160km North of Nairobi.
AIRSTRIPS
The only available airstrip near Mt Kenya is in Nanyuki.
